Notes: | This article presents the study on associations between history of domestic violence and health service use among middle-aged Australian women. Physical and psychological health status, and demographic factors are taken into account in the methodology, which involves a population-based cross sectional postal survey of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health. Out of the 28,000 women randomly selected, 53.5% (14,100) aged 45 to 50 years of age participated. Results show that physical and psychological status accounted for the associations between domestic violence and higher health service use. The exception was GP consultations, which remained associated with domestic violence. This suggests that physical health status only partially explains the increased health service use associated with domestic violence, and both physical and psychological health status explain higher usage of specialist and hospital services. However, it seems likely that women who have experienced domestic violence may be seeing GPs for reasons additional to their health status. |
