This article proposes an alternative model to manage family violence in Aboriginal communities. Indigenous contact with the criminal justice system is affected by the poor relationship with the police, mistrust in the justice system, fears of re-victimisation and further deaths in custody, and concerns about the elevated Aboriginal prison population. Additionally, family violence victims’ needs such as accommodation, counselling and financial assistance are not appropriately addressed by the available agencies. To overcome these setbacks, the authors propose the development of local community-controlled centres that provide comprehensive assistance to the victims and programmes to rehabilitate the offenders. The involvement of the community would replace responsibility for their problems and result in more suitable solutions.
