Title: Home is where the heartache is : the hidden problem of domestic violence
Authors: Robinson, Colin
Keywords: Housing
Year: 2002
Publisher: St Vincent de Paul Society
Notes:  The St Vincent de Paul Society submitted this paper in response to the numbers of women and children who access their services because of domestic violence experiences. The Society offers accommodation, outreach programmes and support for homeless women and children. In Victoria they have developed an innovative programme that houses families in individual units to facilitate and improve the recovery process. The article provides an overview of the problem of domestic violence, its definition, incidence and some of the myths and causes. The reasons behind women’s decision to stay in an abusive relationship are divided into: social pressure, lack of alternatives, fear, and legal ineffectiveness. In order to prevent homelessness, enhanced tenancy laws and an increase in the use of exclusion orders are proposed.
