Notes:  In 1989, the Burdekin report entitled Our homeless children (Burdekin, 1989) highlighted the plight of homeless children and young people. Twenty years later, increasing numbers of children and their families are not only homeless but confronting a range of issues such as parental substance misuse, mental illness and domestic violence. Recent policy directions in the white paper on homelessness entitled The road home: A national approach to reducing homelessness (Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs [FaHCSIA], 2008) place greater emphasis on the needs of homeless children and young people. This paper identifies some innovative and promising approaches to lessen the incidence, duration and impact of homelessness.
