Notes:  This review article uses 27 studies gleaned from a search of Medline and Embase databases to compare perpetrators of homicide-suicides with perpetrators of simple homicides and suicides. The proportion of firearm use in these cases and how it was correlated to firearm availability was also examined.

* Perpetrators of homicide-suicides were older, likely to be male and married or separated from the victims of the homicide compared to the perpetrators of simple homicides or suicides
* Alcohol use, history of unemployment or domestic violence were less likely to be risk factors in homicide-suicides than in simple homicides
The authors conclude that homicide-suicides are a unique kind of violence whose features set them apart from both homicides and suicides.
