Keywords: CALD (culturally and linguistically diverse);Human rights
Year: 2002
Publisher: VAWnet Library
Notes:  Discusses some of the social and economic issues associated with immigrant women’s experience of domestic violence in the United States, highlighting some of the major cultural differences which arise in this context and the various barriers to accessing information, resources and services which exist. A background to the development of legal protections for battered immigrants in the United States is then provided, and key initiatives implemented under the Violence Against Women Act 1994 and its recent amendments, including self-petitions for permanent resident status, cancellation of removal relief, and crime victim visas, are discussed. Claims for gender-based asylum under the Act are also explored as an alternative to these mechanisms and further education in immigrant communities regarding the availability of legal protections and services is advocated.
