Notes:  It has been argued that domestic violence has diverse effects on children exposed to such abuse. This study analyses the incidence and correlates of post-trauma symptoms in 32 boys and 24 girls of 45 mothers who had lived in shelters for women in Adelaide, South Australia. The variables measured were the level of physical violence experienced by families; Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD); psychological symptomatology; and the impact of events on children. The symptoms most frequently found were recurrent distressing thoughts, efforts to avoid thoughts and feelings, hypervigilance and sleeping problems. Twenty per cent of the children qualified for a diagnosis of PTSD.
