Notes:  Outlines the method, measures, procedure and results of a quantitative study investigating the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a sample of 100 residents of a women’s shelter for victims of domestic violence in Adelaide, South Australia. Provides a review of similar studies conducted in the United States which suggest there is a high prevalence of PTSD in women who have experienced abusive relationships and that the severity of symptoms increases with the severity and length of abuse. Highlights the lack of comparable Australian research and clarifies the criteria established for PTSD which were used in the present study, noting its limitations. Concludes that while the findings of this study may confirm results of US studies, and the use of PTSD criteria as a therapeutic tool has its advantages, no single classification system could adequately represent the range of consequences suffered by victims of domestic violence and more research, in a range of areas, is needed.
