Notes:  Reviews recent research on the relationship between intimate partner violence and mental health problems and some of the key protective factors identified in the literature before outlining the methodology and results of a quantitative study directed at understanding the association between women’s mental health problems and recent and/or childhood experiences of family violence. The role of social support, education, self esteem, socio-economic status, employment and health on women’s experiences of depression, anxiety and family violence throughout the life-span was also examined. While the results indicated that both abused and non-abused women received comparable levels of social support and that the presence of protective factors can act as a buffer to the development of mental health problems, where women experienced high levels of lifetime abuse, protective factors were often an inadequate preventative mechanism.
