Notes:  Outlines the research design and methodology of a study aimed at testing the validity of established theories on the intergenerational transmission of violence, which generally predict exposure to child maltreatment increases the risk of becoming an abuser in later life. A review of existing research into the co-occurrence of different forms of family violence and the intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment and intimate partner violence is conducted and some of the problems encountered in studying intergenerational violence are identified. The findings suggest that child maltreatment does not necessarily lead to violent behaviour in later life but that strong associations between child maltreatment and subsequent victimisation of some kind do exist. Some limitations of the study and directions for future research are suggested.
