Notes:  General Overview:This paper presents the findings from a US study of over 5000 patients who presented to an urban public hospital emergency department. Of this number, 548 male and female participants disclosed intimate partner abuse. This group was then assessed for mental and physical health functioning. Findings included:

* as the perception:of risk increased, both physical and mental health functioning decreased in both sexes
* greater self-advocacy was displayed in connection with declining mental health functioning but not with worsening physical health functioning
