Authors: Guggisberg, Marika
Keywords: Theories of violence;Health;Mental health;Pregnancy
Year: 2006
Publisher: Marika Guggisberg, Carine
Notes:  General Overview: This Western Australian paper considers the latest international research on the consequences of intimate partner violence to pregnant women and their unborn children or foetuses.

Methods: The paper is based on a literature review, theoretical analysis and examination of the latest international research and data.

Discussion: Prevalence rates, physical and reproductive health consequences, and the interrelationship between unwanted pregnancies and repeat abortions are discussed.

Results: Abused pregnant women suffer grave physical, reproductive and psychological health impacts. Abuse may become lethal for a significant number of pregnant women and their unborn children. Repeat abortion-seeking conduct is closely associated with unwanted pregnancies as a result of intimate partner violence.

Conclusions: The paper suggests that intimate partner violence during pregnancy needs to be seen as an important women’s and public health issue and recommends further research in this priority area.
