Notes:  This review article looks at the association between intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and use of alcohol among women. The authors analysed results from 55 studies which met their criteria for inclusion after searching 23 databases from their beginning to 2008. A further update of major databases from 2008 until June 2013 was also done.

This review establishes that there is a strong positive association between IPV victimisation and alcohol use among women. Women who misuse alcohol are more likely to report IPV victimisation and women who experience IPV are likely to consume more alcohol. However, the causal relationship is still untested and further research is suggested to determine this association.
