Notes:  Overview: This paper analyses the results of a US survey which endeavoured to ascertain the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) in the year prior to and during pregnancy and maternal and neonatal morbidity.

A study population of 118,579 women was drawn from the 2000 to 2003 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System which operates in 26 of the states in the United States. Among the conclusions of the study were:
* women who experienced IPV during the study’s timeframe were at increased risk of a variety of physical problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, placental problems and related hospitalisation
* neonates born during the study to women who experienced IPV, were at increased risk of preterm delivery, low birth weight and requiring time in an intensive care unit
