Notes:  Overview: This Australian paper provides a review of the literature pertaining to the effects on children who witness intimate partner violence between parents or caregivers. The paper examines the rates of intimate partner violence in the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. It also examines the rates of, and reasons for, co-occurrence of intimate partner violence and child abuse.

The paper discusses the difficulties in separating the effects of direct physical abuse from the effects of living with physical abuse. The similarity in outcomes from both situations is discussed. Implications and recommendations for policy and further research are outlined in the conclusion.
