Notes:  This is a review of international surveys which examines rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrated by men and women. The review focuses on physical forms of violence. The authors take a gender inclusive or gender-neutral approach to their review, claiming that this approach allows hypotheses that both men and women perpetrate physical violence, to be tested. The authors of this comparative review conclude that it is impossible to compare the effects of gender inequality across nationally representative samples when the survey methodology in different countries is inconsistent and that it is also difficult to determine the true rate of IPV within a country.
