Provides an overview of the author’s approach to therapeutic conversations and practice with children from violent homes, utilising the story of Joanne, Jesse and Josh, a family from South Australia, escaping domestic violence, as illustration. Particular questions and activities used in the author’s efforts to engage children in conversations about violence are provided and the importance of acknowledging the family’s experience as their own narrative, with its own meaning, emphasised, as is the development of alternative stories which portray the family as more than simply ‘victims’. Certain complexities in family relationships which should be kept in mind are mentioned, and transcripts of interviews with and letters to Jesse, Joanna and Josh used to show how such situations might be dealt with. Concludes by highlighting the need to recognise children’s active role in living with, escaping and challenging violence in the family and the necessity of remaining open to new therapeutic contexts which might enable this role to be better acknowledged.
