Notes: | Edited extract from the keynote address at the International Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Conference held in Broadbeach, Queensland on 30 July 2003. Huggins commends Mick Dodson’s June 2003 speech to the National Press Club for its powerful message that strong leadership from both the Indigenous and non-Indigenous community is needed to address Indigenous violence, and acknowledges Western Australia’s positive response to the Gordon inquiry into Indigenous family violence. She urges the conference to accept that a white, feminist approach to domestic violence may not be appropriate to every situation and calls for a coordinated and culturally sensitive effort from all levels of government and service providers. Defines the link between Indigenous family violence and national reconciliation and argues that delegates should deliver a strong message to government, media and Indigenous people that violence will no longer be tolerated in the community |
