Notes:  This discussion paper was written to examine the legal outcomes of women who have killed their intimate partners since 2005 when changes were enacted to homicide laws in Victoria. These legislative reforms were brought about in response to issues arising from the application of the partial defence of provocation (especially where men killed their female intimate partners) and also in cases where women who had killed a violent partner relied on self defence in court.
