Notes:	General Overview: This summary paper provides an overview of recent Australian and international research in the area of domestic violence, including research on the nature of domestic violence, its impacts on diverse groups of women, and risk factors associated with the perpetration of violence. The paper focuses on intimate partner violence rather than the broader category of family violence. Discussion: The paper begins by outlining the nature of domestic violence, its prevalence and impacts. The authors explore the debate regarding the relative victimisation of men and women, concluding that most research confirms that women comprise the majority of victims of domestic violence. The authors also present research findings regarding the risk factors associated with domestic violence, specifically: the role of community attitudes towards violence; situational factors, such as alcohol use; early exposure to violence as a child; and access to support networks and services. The final section of the paper discusses the implications of research for policy and practice in the area of domestic violence. The authors emphasise that responses should be guided by Australian and overseas research demonstrating the effectiveness of different strategies, with consideration also given to the suitability of strategies to local contexts.
