Notes: | Outlines the methodology and results of a US study aimed at contrasting the laypersons’ perceptions and psychologists’ judgements of psychological abuse and marital aggression between spouses. An overview of definitional issues surrounding the concept of ‘psychological abuse’ and research suggesting psychologists’ distinctive perceptions of social issues like family violence is provided and it is suggested that, unlike laypersons, psychologists will not approach the phenomenon of psychological abuse in an ‘either/or’ manner but will attend more to contextual factors. |
