This article provides a brief overview of the link between intimate partner violence, family violence and animal abuse. The authors recommend four legal strategies to improve protections for victims and animal, including: information sharing and cross-reporting between animal welfare and social service agencies, companion animal cruelty as ground for protective orders, inclusion of companion animals in protection order decisions, and inclusion of companion animals in safety planning.
