Notes: | Presents the methodology and results of a US research project aimed at testing the hypothesis that battered women exposed to greater levels of post-separation stressors will be at a greater risk of depression and other mental health problems. A review of the literature on the negative effects of domestic violence on survivors’ psychological well-being is conducted and the critical role of the separation period in influencing women’s mental health outcomes is emphasised. Concludes that women exposed to higher levels of violence and secondary stressors in the post-separation period will report higher levels of long-term depression, though this may be tempered by the existence of social support networks and coping resources. Moreover, the relative difference between levels of depression experienced by women suffering high levels of stress in the post-separation period and women who suffered less overall stress in this period, increases over time. |
