Notes:	Discusses recent welfare reforms in the US aimed at decreasing the number of welfare recipients and the extent to which people depend on public assistance before outlining the methodology and findings of the study. The study sample consisted of low-income mothers of children with chronic illnesses and the findings demonstrate the higher risk of domestic violence in this group of women, in addition to the barriers to employment such violence creates. Argues reforms do not take sufficient account of the particular hardship faced by certain groups and that specific health-related exemptions need to be applied.
