Conducts a review of existing literature pertaining to the nature and extent of violence in Indigenous communities, both in Australia and overseas, highlighting key points of tension between Indigenous and non-Indigenous advocates, such as terminology, the relevance of feminism and the causes and consequences of violence. The implications these issues have for Indigenous women’s access to services are then discussed and the debate over Indigenous women’s use of mainstream services is considered. Specific barriers faced by Indigenous women in accessing the justice system are identified and ways of overcoming these barriers suggested in the literature are reviewed. Concludes by summarising some of the key questions raised by the literature and emphasising the need for further research and consultation.
