Notes: | This paper discusses the commodification of women, specifically Filipino women, on the Internet. It examines the links between Filipino mail brides and domestic violence, specifically fatal violence experienced by Filipino women in Australia. Statistics show that Filipino women are 6 times more likely to be killed by their spouse in Australia than are women from Australian backgrounds. The research further analyses the relationships between gender, ethnicity and developing/developed world and violence. By examining the gendered and racialised nature of the movement of women across national boundaries, and their susceptibility to violence, a broader focus can be given to this research than simply the experience of Filipino women in Australia. Argues that the Internet has become one of the biggest market places for the selling and buying of Asian women. In addition, the Internet also reinforces the hierarchies based in race and gender and reproduces inequality within and through cyberspace, as it is a technological tool only available to those with economic privilege and technological access. |
