Notes:  This is a Canadian lecture paper on understanding the impact of traumatic experiences and neglect on the neurobiology of the developing brain of young children. It looks at 6 core strengths for children against violence in the areas of attachment, self regulation, affiliation, attunement, tolerance and respect. It reflects an approach of beginning early, applying a developmental framework, understanding how children cope with adversities, supporting caregivers to support children, and helping professionals understand how children think and learn. It discusses how disrupted development such as inappropriate or abusive caregiving, persisting fear and persisting physical threat could damage the child’s developing brain. It looks at how fear changes the way children think, including the differential state of reactivity and adaptive response to threat, and also outlines prevention and solutions.
