The physical and psychological effects of marital rape on victims are discussed and some of the difficulties associated with intervention in this area are examined. Suggests rape crisis counsellors, advocates for battered women and related professionals are in a particularly critical position and that greater research into the most effective types and modes of assistance is needed, as is research into perpetrators’ motivations and the impact of the abuse on children who witness sexual violence.
