Provides a brief legal history of marital rape in the USA and reviews some of the major research studies conducted into the social characteristics of marital rape survivors, the types of marital rape and the risk factors associated with its occurrence. The physical and psychological effects of marital rape on victims are discussed and some of the difficulties associated with intervention in this area are examined. Suggests that rape crisis counsellors, advocates for battered women and related professionals are in a particularly critical position to provide support to survivors and that training specific to marital rape is essential for staff and volunteers. The role that batterers’ intervention programs should play is also examined. Future directions for research include its prevalence in the community, its impact in marginalised communities and, also, how children are affected by marital rape.
