Notes: | Reports on the initial findings of a qualitative research study being conducted by the Northern Women’s Community Health Centre, Adelaide and the University of Adelaide. Based on a feminist perspective, the project explores the ways in which perpetrators of abuse develop deliberate strategies for alienating victims of abuse from their children and abused children from their mothers. Through a series of semi-structured interviews and focus groups, the study aims to recognise the phenomenon and challenge the ways in which our legal, social and interpersonal systems perpetuate it. Central to this is societal privileging of the male voice, and the construction of motherhood, with a strong accompanying tradition of mother-blame. It is argued that by hearing and validating the experiences of women and children, an improved professional response to the issue might be developed. |
