Notes:  Outlines the methodology and results of a US study that examined the reliability and convergent validity of the Work/School Abuse Scale (W/SAS), a research instrument used to measure the extent to which abusive partners are able to interfere with women’s participation in employment and/or education. Provides an overview of arguments underlying recent welfare reforms, highlighting some of the difficulties associated with attempts to statistically validate these arguments through the use of various instruments. Argues that the findings of the study suggest the W/SAS is both a reliable and valid measure and that its strength as a research tool derives from its flexibility. Contends that the instrument could prove beneficial to victims of violence whose welfare status is under threat or altered and will also provide a valuable source of information on the extent to which women’s participation in education and employment is affected by domestic violence.
