This article provides a review of the historical changes that family law in Australia underwent and the role of newspaper reports, talk-back radio and media coverage in supporting disaffected men and justification for domestic violence. It outlines the men’s groups’ backlash, violence against the Family Court, and the Government’s responses to domestic violence. It discusses how conservative governments became sensitised to the demands of the fathers’ rights groups and traces the reforms of the Family Law Act in response to such demands.
