Notes: | A shortened version of the forthcoming DVIRC discussion paper on the topic of men as victims of domestic violence. Discusses the lack of research conducted on male victims of domestic violence as well as on female perpetrators. Provides an overview of the available data on men as victims of domestic violence from sources such as anecdotes, men’s rights activists, official records (police and hospital records), crime and community surveys. Looks at the effectiveness of research methods that are used in determining domestic violence statistics and argues that many of the surveys conducted are limited by their definition and categorisation of domestic violence. Reviews recent Australian research, including qualitative studies which, by their nature, can provide rich data on emerging and previously little studied areas. Concludes that seeking to better understand the issue of domestic violence against men need not mean sacrificing a political understanding of the pervasiveness of male violence against women, but rather complicating it. Yet domestic violence is a field in which workers are well used to grappling with many such complexities and dilemmas. |
