Notes:	Myths and stereotypes about women with developmental disabilities have contributed to increasing their vulnerability in domestic violence situations. This article is written from a US context and presents an ecological model comprising three levels, to identify the factors that maintain and facilitate the abuse, in order to develop appropriate interventions. At the microsystem level, cognitive limitations for problem solving, high levels of dependency, low self-esteem and learned helplessness are recognised. Interventions focus on developing skills and addressing personal characteristics that predispose women to abuse. Social factors like isolation, poor communication and poor family relationships are included at the mesosystem stage. An assessment of the abusive relationship and potential sources of support are explored in this level of intervention. Finally, limited opportunities to be economically independent, stigmatisation and lack of accessible services are found at the macrosystem level. Advocacy and service provision are considered positive responses, and further empirical research recommended.
