Notes:  Drawing upon their experiences working at Elsie’s Women & Children’s Refuge, the authors discuss some of the specific disadvantages faced by migrant women experiencing domestic violence. Argues that despite the introduction of provisions allowing for applications for permanent residence to be made on the basis of a need for protection from domestic abuse, migrant women are still silenced by the system and the attitudes and stereotypes that lie at its foundation. Advocates for the provision of income support to migrant women escaping domestic violence as a way of enhancing their independence and reducing the likelihood they will return to their abusive spouses for financial reasons
