Notes:  Acknowledges the role of feminism in shifting the view of domestic violence from individual psychopathology to ‘a pervasive social problem’, and outlines the ideological basis for the emphasis on batterer re-socialisation as the preferred mode of intervention. Argues, however, that the results of this intervention mode have been disappointing, and that the preference for this type of intervention is not supported by research or clinical data. Outlines the option of solution focussed treatment where a couple chooses to stay together and illustrates this approach with a case study. Writing from a US context, argues for family therapists to join with police, refuge workers and others as part of a holistic, co-ordinated response to domestic violence.
