Notes: | Assesses the development, across the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Finland and the Netherlands, of various methodological approaches to conducting national surveys on violence against women. Identifies three ‘types’ of survey and the major issues which should be considered in determining which kind to use, how interviews will be conducted, how the sampling frame will be established, how definitions and concepts will be operationalised and how to begin situating the information gathered within the context in which it has occurred. Argues that although innovative new approaches are beginning to emerge, further methodological improvements are needed and suggestions for the revision of old and the development of new tools are made. |
