Notes: | This article looks at the experiences of domestic violence and use of domestic violence resources among immigrant women in the US who are Russian-speaking. Focus groups and individual semi-structured interviews were used. Participants, many of whom entered the US as ‘mail-order brides’, reported diverse forms of abuse such as isolation and financial restraints, and were reluctant to seek outside help because of embarrassment. Participants recommended language and culture-appropriate outreach and services, including information about domestic violence services and laws on immigration. International marriages were a particular area of concern. Victims made recommendations that point to the need for potential changes in policy regarding international marriages, such as: prohibiting those convicted of prior domestic violence offences from bringing a spouse from overseas; applicants’ criminal and marriage history being made available to fianc?es before they come to the US; and giving information to women in their own languages about domestic violence resources before they leave their country of origin. |
