Notes:	Outlines the methodology and results of a New Zealand study directed at assessing whether the initial success of an emergency department protocol of care for victims of domestic violence was maintained over a one-year period. Comparisons of two emergency departments in Auckland public hospitals revealed that, although increasing staff training and education in the use of protocols was capable of producing improvements in standards of care, the initial effects of the new measures did not continue. Suggests that if protocol benefits are to be maintained, institutional mechanisms for implementation and evaluation must be improved. Some alternatives to short-term training of staff, as a means to achieving this, are then presented.
