Notes:  Reports on the 18-month pilot programme of police management of domestic violence being run in the Shoalhaven and Lake Illawarra Local Area Command of the NSW Police. In order to prioritise police response to domestic violence, offenders have been categorised into three groups: high-, medium-, and low-risk offenders. High-risk offenders are case-managed and telephone interim orders are applied for in every incident involving high- or medium-risk offenders. For the 52% of offenders who are of low risk, police may use their discretion in dealing with the incident and this includes cautioning the offender and also taking into account the wishes of the victim in deciding whether to arrest the individual.
