Title: Overcoming the barriers to disclosure and inquiry of partner abuse for women attending general practice
Other Titles: Australian and New Zealand journal of public health
Authors: Hegarty, Kelsey L
Taft, Angela
Keywords: Community attitudes;Health;Training;Screening
Year: 2001
Publisher: Public Health Association of Australia
Citation: 25 (5), 2001
Notes:  Utilises the results of complementary quantitative and qualitative studies to assess the rates of and major barriers to disclosure of partner abuse by women attending general practice and to ascertain the extent to which general practitioners question patients about domestic abuse. Major barriers identified include women’s perception of the problem as their own, perceptions of general practitioners as unable or unwilling to help and the low rate of GP inquiry. Advocates for greater community recognition of domestic violence as a public health issue and the incorporation of training in communication skills and domestic violence education into medical school curricula. The introduction of routine screening however is not given unqualified support.
