Notes:  Article looks at Shirley Patton’s report of a study conducted in Tasmania whose aim was to determine the factors that enabled women to leave a violent relationship and the steps they took to achieve that end. Fifty-three women from diverse backgrounds and with an age range of 23 to 63 years were interviewed. The study documented the varied acts of resistance used by women and then the turning points which enabled women ultimately to leave their partners. Patton believes the process of leaving is characterised by five phases and that, while various pathways are chosen, it is the formal supports from specialised domestic violence services in particular which are the most significant in helping women. The study also looks at the barriers to leaving and makes recommendations for improvements to both the formal and informal supports available to women who seeking to leave. Details for obtaining a copy of the report are given.
