Notes:  Outlines the methodology and findings of a Canadian study aimed at exploring the relationship between South Asian immigrant women’s perceptions of spousal abuse and female victimisation, as well as their relative acceptance of patriarchal norms and beliefs. The growth in recognition of violence against women in different cultural and geographic regions is considered and it is suggested that, while knowledge and understanding has improved, there is still little research done into the role of patriarchy in the perpetuation of this violence. The findings indicate women’s beliefs about gender roles can be highly influential in how women define and explain spousal violence, and it is suggested that education and awareness about patriarchy is critical to both prevention of domestic violence and intervention with victims in other cultures.
