Notes:  Argues that there are two distinct forms of couple violence – ‘patriarchal terrorism’ which is a product of patriarchal traditions and involves terroristic control of wives through the use of violence and control tactics such as economic abuse, threats and isolation; and ‘common couple violence’ in which occasional conflict gets out of hand leading to ‘minor’ forms of violence. The latter is gender balanced and is a product of a violence-prone culture. Suggests that the debate between the 2 schools of researchers (family violence/sociological and feminist) about issues such as gender symmetry/asymmetry and reciprocity and initiation of violence, arises because they are in fact studying different, non-overlapping, phenomena. Discusses the implication for educational and therapeutic efforts of the assumption of one form of couple violence.
