Notes:  Outlines the methodology and results of a study which investigated the extent to which the particular characteristics of an abusive relationship and women’s help-seeking behaviours are associated with their physical and emotional health. The sample comprised 1,168 Australian women aged 49-53 years, all of whom were participants in the longitudinal Women’s Health Australia project. A background to the issue of domestic violence and its effect on women’s health is provided. Argues that the results do not support any direct relationship between the nature of the abuse, help-seeking behaviours and women’s health, and that a history of abuse is only one aspect of a woman’s life that will impact on her physical and emotional functioning. Suggests that personal and social factors will also play a key role in determining the nature of women’s experiences.
