Notes:  This study explores the variables that influence women's decision about returning to their violent (ex)partners. Around eighty women who were living in one of South Australia's shelters for women completed a questionnaire. Follow–up data were obtained two months later. The factors measured to establish women's intention to go back and actually going back are the frequency and severity of violence, the number of times a women had previously left, age, number of children, income, housing, belief that their partner had changed, commitment to relationship, allocation of responsibility for violence, traditional sex-role beliefs and self-esteem. The women who intended to stay away from their violent partner reported more frequent and severe violence, older children, and a lower belief that their partner had changed. Two months later, sixteen women had returned to the abusive relationship.
