Notes:  This paper reports on the outcomes of a study set in Brisbane aimed to determine whether pregnancy and neonatal outcomes differed between abused and nonabused women. 1014 women took part in the Queensland study and from this, 301 reported either past or present abuse. The study reported that women who had experienced abuse were more susceptible to miscarriages, higher termination rates, neonatal deaths and on the whole the child’s birth weight was lower. The study also found that abused women more often smoked, took prescription drugs, drank alcohol, generally had more health problems than the nonabused women, and consequently used social services more frequently, and were more likely to come from lower socio-economic groups. The study concluded that domestic abuse adds significantly to the cost of health care during pregnancy and is associated with poor maternal and fetal outcomes.
