Overview:This paper presents findings from the Judicial Oversight Demonstration Initiative on the implementation of innovations at the pretrial stage in domestic violence cases at three demonstration sites in the US.

Discussion:The Judicial Oversight Demonstration Initiative was created in response to the high risk in which domestic violence victims are placed in the period after arrest of the perpetrator but before the disposition of the case. The three sites chosen (for a demonstration trial) were Dorchester, Massachusetts, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Washtenaw County, Michigan.

Challenges to the implementation of these improvements include: limited resources, a lack of consistency amongst judicial practices; a lack of definition in the roles of different service providers.
