Notes:  Outlines the methodology and results of a study aimed at exploring the prevalence and characteristics of psychological abuse in the context of physical intimate assaults. Some 3370 women in a southern US metropolitan area were interviewed following contact with the justice system on the basis of a domestic violence incident. The nature of the offence before the court, the characteristics of the perpetrator and victims’ responses to the abuse were also examined. Concludes that the majority of women involved with the courts following a domestic assault report some form of psychological abuse and that levels of psychological abuse play a role in the victim’s decision to leave a violent relationship and perception of future threat by the perpetrator. Suggests these findings indicate a need to draw attention to the impact of psychological abuse on victims, independent of its physical counterparts.
