Study conducted at Middlemore Hospital in South Auckland, New Zealand to determine the prevalence of intimate partner violence among women attending the adult or paediatric emergency care department. Eligible adult women presenting during randomly selected 4-hour time blocks were asked to participate in a structured interview which followed a culturally safe study protocol. Results obtained from the 174 participants showed that 21% screened positive for partner violence during the past year and 44% reported the incidence of partner violence at some time during adulthood. It is concluded that the rate of partner violence measured was significant and was consistent with rates reported overseas, and that the high response rate (60%) indicated the willingness of women to answer sensitive questions in a hospital setting.
